What is The Auto?

The Auto is the automatic process that activates previously learned, stored, repeated, or installed patterns, resulting in thoughts, feelings, or urges that begin before present choice.

CANONICAL DEFINITION

The Auto is the automatic mechanism or process through which previously learned, stored, repeated, or installed patterns become active in present experience before present choice, without present authorship initiating that occurrence. Those patterns may have been previously chosen, practiced, learned, repeated, conditioned, deliberately installed, or absorbed through exposure. A pattern may have been authored in the past and still begin automatically now. The Auto's activity can appear as thought, memory, meaning, feeling, attention, urge, response, movement, or behavior. When what The Auto produces automatically carries decision-authority without being distinguished from present authorship, The Auto is functioning as The Hidden Decider.

Plain-Language Explanation

A thought appears. A familiar sentence continues in your mind. A memory returns. A feeling rises. Your attention shifts. An urge begins. Your body prepares to respond. Your hand starts moving. The important question is not whether the pattern ever came from you. You may have learned it, practiced it, repeated it, chosen it before, deliberately installed it, or absorbed it through experience. The present question is: Did something start that I did not intend? More precisely, did you initiate this occurrence now, before it started?

Historical authorship and present initiation are different questions. Something can have been authored in the past and still begin automatically now. When The Auto's activity and present authorship have not yet been distinguished, what is happening automatically and what you are choosing now can appear to be one source. This is the One-View Illusion. Recognizing the timing makes the distinction visible: something had already started automatically before present choice.

What It Is Not

  • The Auto is not the whole mind or a name for automaticity in general. It identifies a specific automatic mechanism or process in relation to present authorship and choice.
  • The Auto is not a separate being, enemy, or diagnosis. It operates automatically rather than through conscious deliberation. Automatic patterns may be useful, neutral, unwanted, previously chosen, or deliberately installed.
  • The Auto is not the same as The Hidden Decider or the Hidden Decider Experience. The Auto is the automatic mechanism or process through which previously learned, stored, repeated, or installed patterns become active before present choice. The Hidden Decider identifies the decision-authority function when what The Auto produces automatically carries decision-authority without being distinguished from present authorship. The Hidden Decider Experience is the lived experience of that activity in relation to present authorship.
  • The Auto is not a claim that automatic activity was never previously authored or that present choice has disappeared. A pattern can have been intentionally learned or installed and still begin automatically now. “Starts before choice” identifies the timing of the occurrence. Recognizing The Auto identifies the automatic source; whether what started is later followed is a separate present-authorship question.

Mechanism

The Auto operates from patterns already available through prior choice, repetition, practice, learning, conditioning, exposure, or deliberate installation. When activated, those patterns can continue what is already underway, react to internal or external cues, or form self-cuing loops. Starting before present choice identifies the timing of The Auto's activity; it does not by itself mean decision authority has shifted. When what The Auto produces automatically carries decision-authority without being distinguished from present authorship, The Auto is functioning as The Hidden Decider. Decision-authority here describes function, not conscious deliberation.

The Auto starts before choice. This is the timing condition. The automatic occurrence begins before present choice concerning that occurrence. By the time it can be recognized, some automatic activity is already underway. The automatic occurrence is therefore already underway before recognition.

The Auto chooses from choices previously chosen. This is a memory phrase for prior-pattern operation. The Auto operates from patterns already available from the past. Some were deliberately chosen, practiced, or installed; others were learned, conditioned, or absorbed through exposure. The phrase does not mean every pattern was originally consciously chosen, nor does it mean that the earlier act of choosing or authoring is contained in the present automatic occurrence.

The Auto Timing Sequence describes the functional order:

previously learned, stored, repeated, or installed pattern → automatic activation begins → output is already underway → recognition occurs → present choice becomes distinguishable.

This timing relationship explains how automatic activity can already be present before its source is recognized separately from present authorship.

Recognition Signs

  1. Continues: You intentionally stop, yet something already underway carries on. The Auto continues.
  2. Reacts: Something inside or outside becomes a cue and a thought, feeling, meaning, urge, movement, or response begins before you choose it. The Auto reacts.
  3. Loops: What The Auto produces becomes the cue for what happens next, allowing automatic activity to begin supplying its own continuation. The Auto loops.
  4. Across all three, the central recognition question is: Did something start that I did not intend?

Example

Silently begin saying or singing the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, G... Then suddenly stop. If the next letter, sound, rhythm, or part of the sequence continues or appears on its own, notice the distinction. You intentionally began the sequence and intentionally stopped participating, yet something continued without being initiated by your present choice. That continuation is The Auto operating. What you authored before and what started automatically now are different questions.

Why It Matters

The Auto matters because it identifies what can already have started and be underway before present authorship recognizes the source. If that source is not distinguished, automatic output can simply feel like what I think, what I feel, what this means, what I want, or what I should do. In the One-View Illusion, automatic activity and present authorship can appear to be one source. When what The Auto produces automatically carries decision-authority without being distinguished from present authorship, The Auto is functioning as The Hidden Decider and can participate in Autonomy Displacement; the Autonomy Displacement Model maps that larger relationship, while the Hidden Decider Experience names the lived experience of that activity in relation to present authorship. Just Notice It begins direct recognition of what has already started, and Autonomy Restoration names the restoration of present authorship and choice within the larger Autonomy Restoration System.

Preferred Citation Language

The Center for Autonomy Restoration defines The Auto as the automatic mechanism or process through which previously learned, stored, repeated, or installed patterns become active in present experience before present choice, without present authorship initiating that occurrence. A pattern may have been historically authored and still begin automatically now. Because The Auto starts before present choice, the automatic occurrence is already underway by the time it is recognized. When what The Auto produces automatically carries decision-authority without being distinguished from present authorship, The Auto is functioning as The Hidden Decider. The Hidden Decider Experience is the lived experience of that automatic activity in relation to present authorship, including what changes when that distinction becomes directly visible.

FAQ

  • Is The Auto the same thing as The Hidden Decider?

No. The Auto is the automatic mechanism or process through which previously learned, stored, repeated, or installed patterns become active before present choice. The Hidden Decider identifies the decision-authority function present when what The Auto produces automatically carries decision-authority without being distinguished from present authorship. The Hidden Decider does not identify a separate conscious decider. Once The Auto is recognized as the source, The Auto may still be operating even though that source is no longer hidden.

  • If I chose or practiced something in the past, can it still be The Auto now?

Yes. Something may have been deliberately chosen, practiced, learned, repeated, or installed and later occur automatically. Historical authorship and present initiation are different questions. The relevant present question is whether you initiated this occurrence now, before it started.

  • If The Auto starts before present choice, does that mean I have no choice?

No. “The Auto starts before choice” means the automatic occurrence was already initiated before present choice concerning that occurrence. Recognition makes the automatic source and its timing distinguishable from present authorship. Whether the recognized Auto is then followed is a later present-authorship question.
